Located beneath the St Michael’s Church is a crypt holding the remains of the Wittelsbach family, who ruled Bavaria until the 19th century. Morbid ornaments adorn the richly detailed coffins of this family, including those of Ludwig II -the “Mad King”- who died under unusual circumstances after draining the Bavarian coffers to build his lavish castles, such as the infamous Neuschwanstein.
