Old cows are smart and will teach the younger ones but have a high winterkill rate. Since they’re too old and tough to be eaten, this isn’t seen as a waste of meat. Trust me, old cow doesn’t hamburger well! Old in this context is 12 to 16 years old, with ten or more calves behind them.
