Explore sea anemones of the British waters in Philip Henry Gosse’s “Actinologia Britannica” (1860)
Philip Henry Gosse was an English naturalist perhaps best-known for his work related to marine aquariums. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Gosse “built the first successful aquarium for the long-term housing of marine animals, which he described in ‘The Aquarium’ (1854)”. It is in that same book that he is credited with coining the term “aquarium”.
“Actinologia Britannica”, published in 1860, was particularly praised for the chromolithographs prepared by W. Dickes from Gosse’s watercolors. In addition to anemones, the work also included a handful or coral species.
“Actinologia Britannica” was digitized in BHL by the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, University of Toronto.
